Friedrich v. Kraelitz-Greifenhorst (1876-1932) became the first full professor of Turkology in 1923, a position he held until 1932 (see History of Turkish Studies at the Department of Near Eastern Studies). He may be considered the founder of Ottoman Turkish diplomatics. The study of Ottoman documents has continued up to the present day in Vienna.

The design of the logo refers to this Viennese tradition. The tughra (insignia) of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent (r. 1520-1566), perhaps the most elegant tughra, served as a model. His exquisite berat, now included in the collections of THE MET Museum, inspired our graphic designer Dajana Saric when she designed our logo.
